A small study on the safety of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim) in patients with bacterial vaginosis (BV) has been halted, but the results of two large clinical trials show it is still possible to use a drug to treat BV. One trial, sponsored by Merck and conducted in the United States, showed that patients who used Bactrim for three days or more at a time were at least 2.6 times as likely to have a vaginal sore than those who took no drug. The other trial, sponsored by Merck and conducted in the Netherlands, found that patients who used Bactrim for three days or more had a four times as likely to have vaginal soreness as those who took no drug. The two trials also showed that patients who took Bactrim for three days or more had an annual vaginal sore of 2.2 times as likely as those who took no drug. The two trials were all part of a larger clinical trial that compared Bactrim to a placebo. The results of the two trials are presented in a poster for Publix.

The findings of the two trials are published online March 1 in

.

In the current study, Bactrim, which is an antibiotic, was administered orally at a dose of 250 mg for three days or more in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, double-dummy, multicenter, double-dose study at 10 locations in three European cities, in three countries, and in three other European countries.

The study was designed to be a part of a larger trial to look at BV in adults with BV who were not treated with other treatments for BV and were also treated with a drug for a prolonged period. A total of 622 patients were enrolled in the two trials, and Bactrim and other drugs were excluded from the trial, including: (1) the patients who were treated with an antibiotic, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim; Pfizer); (2) the patients who had not been treated with any other antibiotic; (3) the patients who had a vaginal sore of 2.2 times or greater compared with the patients who had a vaginal sore of 2.0 times or greater; (4) the patients who were treated with Bactrim for three days or more; and (5) the patients who had a vaginal sore of 2.2 times or greater compared with the patients who had a vaginal sore of 2.0 times or greater.

The researchers and their colleagues recruited patients who were enrolled in the Bactrim and other drug trials and then compared the patients who were enrolled in the Bactrim trials to the patients who were enrolled in the placebo trials. They also compared the patients who were enrolled in the Bactrim trials with the patients who were enrolled in the placebo trials. The researchers found no difference in the two groups.

The researchers and their colleagues noted that the study participants had been taking Bactrim for three days or more at a time, and the drugs they were on had been taken for a prolonged period. They also noted that there was an increase in the risk of developing BV in patients who were treated with Bactrim and who were treated with an antibiotic.

The researchers also noted that the researchers found no increased risk of vaginal sore development when Bactrim was used for a prolonged period. They concluded that Bactrim and other drugs that are prescribed to treat BV are safe and effective in treating BV, and that it is still possible to use a drug to treat BV in patients with BV who are not treated with other drugs for BV.

The two trials were sponsored by Pfizer. They are the latest in a series of clinical trials sponsored by Merck and conducted in the United States. Merck is the drug company that has helped more than 50 million patients treat bacterial vaginosis, a condition that affects more than 1 in 10 people in the U. S. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association published in April revealed that patients taking a penicillin antibiotic for more than three days were at least two times more likely to have a vaginal sore than those on no drug. The study was designed to be part of a larger clinical trial to look at BV in adults with BV who were not treated with other treatments for BV and were also treated with a drug for a prolonged period.
